By definition, common preeminence is an oxymoron.

The term common denotes that an action is done often.  If something is common it is usual and prevalent.  We commonly see cars, shopping centers, and gas stations.  They are common but necessary in life.

Preeminence exemplifies superiority.  It constantly does the unexpected and surpasses all others. If something is preeminent it represents more than the status quo. School leaders who possess common preeminence represent passionate individuals who, when asked, would say they are just doing their job and couldn't imagine doing any less than.  They don't believe they are doing extraordinary things.  However, when we talk to the employees at schools with these common preeminent leaders we hear their stories and find that these leaders are doing remarkable things.  When we make comparisons among school leaders, common preeminent leaders always outshine the rest.

We can find examples of common preeminence everywhere.  Look around you at the beauties in your life.  Sometimes we take those for granted.  But to an unfamiliar eye, they are astonishing.  The research on common preeminent school leaders serves to illuminate the powerful impact they have on the lives of the teachers, staff, and students at their schools.  What we can learn from these leaders should be known and used to grow other leaders.

The symbol of this research is a hill, inspired by a common preeminent school principal who said,

"They (my teachers) know I stand on the hill for them all day long, to keep things off their plate".

As a leader, do you stand on a hill for your teachers? Do your teachers believe you would stand on a hill for them?
